Bait & Switch

It sounded too good to be true

She read the coupon again: $7.95 a room for carpet cleaning and they’ll move most furniture. “Good”, Bonnie said to herself as she calculated the total cost of the 3 areas she wanted cleaned (about 400 sq. ft.). “That’ll cost me less than $24.00!”

The birth of their first child was drawing closer every day and she wanted everything to be perfect!  She had considered renting a machine and doing the job herself, but thinking back on the last time she had tried that, the idea was quickly dismissed!  It had been so miserably difficult and the carpet had not even come clean.  “No, this time I’m going to let a professional do it”. Besides, how could anyone pass up an offer like this! Only $24 for the whole job!  She picked up the phone and made the appointment.

When the “technician” arrived, he seemed to be in a hurry.  He barged through the door with hardly an introduction and started spearing her carpet with some kind of probe.  The way he darted about, she thought he looked more like a spear fisherman in hot pursuit of a fish than a carpet cleaner.

“Uh-huh”…he mumbled to himself as he jotted something down on a piece of paper.  “Urine in carpet, extremely heavy soil…  This will definitely require pre-treatment, Ma’am.”

“Pre-treatment?”, Bonnie repeated questioningly. “Does that cost extra?”

“Well, yes Ma’am. 25¢ a square foot for the urine and 35¢ a square foot for  the heavy soil. Now, just sign here… this means you agree to pay these charges, plus a 3% travel fee and it also releases my employer from liability for any damage I may cause…”

“Huh?  What?”  She was still looking around at her carpet thinking it didn’t look “heavily soiled” to her. -- Urine?  In the seven years that she had her dog, she had never known it to go in the house. -- How much did he say it would cost? She didn’t even know exactly, but she did know it was a whole lot more than the $7.95 a room that they had advertised. -- Release who from what? -- She was confused.  This was not at all what she had expected and it was happening so fast…

“I’ll need to fill up my machine with your tap.  Where’s the John?”, he asked as he wandered down the hall.

“Hey.  Wait a minute.  Excuse me”, she stumbled down the hall after him.  “What if I don’t agree to these charges?”

He looked at her in disbelief. “Well, it’s your choice, Lady, but your carpet’s not gonna get clean without it.  It may even look or smell worse!  You’ll have to sign this here… it says you understand that the job is not guaranteed.  Now, just move the furniture you want me to clean under so I can get on with this, Lady.  I haven’t got all day!  He stood there picking dirt from under his finger nails.

She was stunned at his rudeness. Didn’t he notice that she was PREGNANT?  Didn’t the coupon say that they would move most furniture?

With sudden clarity, she realized that she did not wish to have this creep in her home one moment longer. Even at $7.95 a room, it wasn’t worth going through this! She asked him to leave immediately.

She sat down and wondered what she should do now.  She couldn’t believe how violated she felt.  She was upset and exhausted -- and the carpet still wasn’t cleaned!  Taking a deep breath, she opened up the phone book and got ready to call down the long list of carpet cleaning companies in hopes of doing better this time.  She did not want to go through this again!  Weary and frustrated, she wished there was a better way.z

Has this ever happened to you?  You’d be shocked how often occurrences just like this -- and worse -- befall consumers everyday.  This is the true account of what happened, as we were preparing for the birth of my first child.  The incident was partially responsible for our decision to go into the carpet cleaning business.  We experienced first hand the scarcity of quality services and decided to fill the void.

I’m sharing this so you can avoid a horrible experience like the one she had.  Having accurate information and a better understanding of carpet cleaning will allow you to make an informed, intelligent decision.

I’ve dedicated my business to educating consumers.  I’ll be happy to help you in every way.  So, if you’d like a free copy of our Consumer’s Guide to Carpet Cleaning , or if you’d like to ask a question about carpet cleaning, you are invited to call me at 526-4444.  If I am not in my office, just leave a message and I’ll get back to you promptly.

Even though most of my clients would never even think about using another cleaning company, I know that when you get a flyer on your door or a coupon in the mail that says “have your whole house cleaned for only $29.95” that it could be tempting to call those businesses

I’m the same way.  I’m attracted to a low price and a good deal on products and services that I need and use.  And when I can get a really good deal, I get excited in a couple of different ways:

1.)   I love to save money!

2.)  I love the feeling of getting more than my money’s worth.

I encourage you to do your best to be a wise consumer. When it comes to carpet cleaning, it is especially important that you know what you are buying!

There is more to carpet cleaning than meets the eye.  Did you know that the appearance of your carpet is one of the least important reasons to have your carpet cleaned?

Most people only have their carpets cleaned when they look dirty.  But if you wait until your carpet and furniture looks dirty before you clean them, you are waiting too long!  You wouldn’t wait until your clothes looked dirty before you washed them, it would be unsanitary.

So make sure you give your carpets and upholstery the same quality of care you give your clothes.  Unless you don’t want them to last very long.

Considering that carpeting is often the single largest investment in the home, it makes good economical sense to take extremely good care of it.

Call me now at 526-4444 or email to apexofww@hotmail.com and I will answer your questions or to make an appointment.z
